SoundExchange: Your Recording = Your Royalties

SoundExchange's Wade Metzler will explain what it is, why it pays and how to get your share. Registering (free!) with SoundExchange can earn you royalties on satellite radio, Internet radio, cable TV music channels and other services that stream sound recordings. Becoming a member allows you to further maximize your royalties for streams around the world. SoundExchange is a non-profit, and an important source of revenue for all artists (big and small) and labels (indie and major): they've distributed over $3.5 billion to artists and labels so far. But thousands of artists and labels don't know they need to register, and millions in royalties haven't yet been claimed. Interactive and question-driven, this workshop will also cover need-to-know info on copyright, licensing, metadata and legislation that will affect your career.

Voice of Reason: Master Session with Eric Whitacre
Eric Whitacre is truly a composer for our time. His music is grounded in classical tradition, but he embraces technology as a means of uniting musicians and audiences, and as part of the creative process itself (his 2015 piece Deep Field is scored for chorus, orchestra and mobile app!). While he has earned a Grammy, impressive sales and global renown for his choral music, Whitacre knows the value of diversification. He’s constantly expanding his horizons, collaborating with Hollywood film composers and pop icons, and traveling the world as a speaker and educator. One month after his appointment as the LA Master Chorale's first Artist-in-Residence, Whitacre will lead this multimedia seminar about process, inspiration, and why concert music is still so valuable to music makers and listeners alike in the 21st century.

We Are Young: A Conversation Between Nate Ruess & Paul Williams
After over a decade of paying his dues and developing his craft in various music projects, in 2011 singer-songwriter Nate Ruess and his mates in the band fun. released their single “We Are Young” into the world. The song, featuring guest vocals by Janelle Monae, became a #1 hit, earning Ruess two Grammys and a new position as one of the world’s reigning pop stars. Ruess became an in-demand collaborator, and with P!nk, with whom he dueted on “Just Give Me a Reason,” he earned his second #1 hit. In 2015, he released his first solo album, Grand Romantic, and its powerful single, “Nothing Without Love,” taking his career to new heights. In this special session, Grammy, Oscar and Golden Globe-winning Hall of Fame songwriter Paul Williams will join Reuss in an honest conversation about their respective musical paths. They will explore the joys, and pains, of pursuing a creative life, how to be truly committed to your craft and how to stay open and productive as a songwriter, no matter what stage you are at in your career.

AFM & SAG-AFTRA Intellectual Property Rights Distribution Fund
Navigating the complex minefield of intellectual property rights is getting harder, not easier. The AFM & SAG-AFTRA IPRD Fund exists to ensure that performers receive royalties for their intellectual property. But what are performers rights and performance rights, how are they different, and how do they overlap? Who gets money from the AFM and SAG-AFTRA Fund and why? What type of royalties does the Fund distribute? Is it possible to receive money from more than one Collective Management Society (e.g. SoundExchange, AARC) or Performance Rights Organization (e.g. ASCAP), and if so, how? What are the sources of all of these different royalties, and how do performers get their fair share? What is the future of royalties from intellectual property rights and what does that mean to a performer? Representatives and fellow performers from the AFM & SAG-AFTRA IPRD Fund will be on hand to answer these questions and more.

The Emperor of Sound: A Keynote Interview with Timbaland (Presented by ole)
What would pop and urban music sound like without Timbaland? This sonic guru has been expanding our ears and minds for two decades with his innovative production work. Timbaland’s collaborations with Ginuwine, Aaliyah and Missy Elliott helped to turn these incredible talents into superstars. He obliterated genre lines in his work with Nelly Furtado, Chris Cornell and Björk; icons like Beyoncé, Jay Z and Justin Timberlake turn to him over and over again for his unerring ear for strange and unforgettable sounds. In 2015, Timbaland created a new musical language for the small screen, as the executive music producer and co-songwriter of Empire - the biggest show on television. 20 years into his reign, Timbaland could easily rest on his laurels. But he just keeps moving and growing. In this keynote interview, Timbaland will look back at the moments that have defined his career, discuss his new book The Emperor of Sound, and then look ahead: to his forthcoming solo album Opera Noir, the future of Empire, and beyond. Don’t miss this chance to get unprecedented insight into the mind and creative spirit of one of the great writer-producers of our era.

Bandzoogle: Website Demolition Derby - Live Website Reviews
This eternally awesome panel will offer live, no-holds-barred critiques of real websites. Our panelists will assess design, organization, content and functionality. How does the website fit with the artist's overall online strategy, and how successfully does it achieve the artist’s goals? Our experts have worked with hundreds of songwriters and musicians (including themselves), from major label superstars to secluded basement composers. They know all about website best practices, and they’re deeply allergic to bad design, music that autostarts, Flash widgets and unreadable fonts. We’ve instructed each of our panelists to leave all diplomacy aside, so if you’re courageous enough to submit your website for their scrutiny, send a note to Bandzoogle’s Dave Cool: dcool@bandzoogle.com.

Within a few months of meeting in 1979, rock singer Pat Benatar and musical jack-of-all-trades Neil Giraldo had recorded Benatar’s debut album In the Heat of the Night. By 1982, they were married, and had a second Grammy on their hands for the #1 album Precious Time, co-produced and co-written by Giraldo. And while their chemistry was obvious from the get-go, neither of them could have predicted that they’d still be partners in life and music 37 years later. In this illuminating panel, you’ll find out how Benatar and Giraldo have evolved as individuals and as a musical power couple. They’ll talk about how their relationship has been shaped by fame, family and the rigors of the road - and all the unexpected things that happen when life, love and rock ‘n’ roll intertwine.

Feeling Kinda Naughty: The Music of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
When Rachel Bloom won a Golden Globe for Best Actress for the irreverent CW series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend this January, it was the culmination of years of hard work and development. Since the very beginning, Rachel and her collaborators have kept music at the center of the show - and the same goes for her own comedy career, all the way back to her 2010 viral video “F**k Me, Ray Bradbury.” But how do you craft elaborate musical numbers that work as songs, as part of the narrative, and as comedy - all the while keeping in mind your budgets, you audience and the TV format? Bloom and her fellow ASCAP collaborators, Jack Dolgen (an alum of the ASCAP Lester Sill Workshop) and Adam Schlesinger (Grammy/Emmy-winning member of Fountains of Wayne and Ivy), will pull back the curtain on the music of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, in what promises to be a hilarious and perhaps slightly inappropriate panel.
